Sofwave FAQ

  • What is Sofwave?

Starting in our mid-20’s, collagen and elastin begins to break down causing our skin to wrinkle. Sofwave is a new, clinically-proven, little or no downtime, non-invasive, non-surgical approach to rebuilding collagen. Sofwave uses a unique delivery form of precisely controlled ultrasound waves. Treatment can be used on a wide range of ages and skin colors. Sofwave can also be performed on most facial and neck areas including brows and a variety of other applications.

  • Is Sofwave FDA Cleared?

FDA Cleared for lifting lax tissue under the chin, neck and eyebrows as well as reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

  • How does Sofwave work?

Sofwave is not a resurfacing procedure, but rather regenerates aging skin. The depth for treating wrinkles is 1.5mm under the skin. Sofwave’s unique synchronous ultrasound parallel beam technology generates controlled heat at this depth in the skin’s mid-dermis. Additionally, there is an integrated cooling mechanism that helps protect the uppermost skin layer from excessive thermal injury. The treatment zones stimulate a healing response, called neo-collagenases, which increases and regenerates the collagen in the skin, leading to the reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

  • How long does it take to see results?

Results may be seen as soon as a month or two following the treatment. However, the collagen regeneration process continues for many weeks, so patients typically see ongoing improvements for over 6 months after their treatment.

  • Can Sofwave replace a surgical procedure?

Sofwave is an office based procedure and is a great alternative for those who are not ready to take that extra step and undergo plastic surgery. However the results will be more dramatic in a surgical procedure, but there are risks involved with a surgical procedure, with the anesthesia and the possible occurrence of scar tissue. If you have severe skin laxity and a surgical procedure such as a face or neck lift is more optimal. With Sofwave, there is typically no downtime with only transient redness and slight to minimal transient swelling.

  • What does the Sofwave treatment feel like?

As the ultrasound energy is delivered, patients may feel warmness of the skin. Treatment is made more comfortable simply by applying a topical anesthetic cream a short time prior to the treatment. Following treatment, there is typically no need to apply special care on the skin. Patients typically resume their daily skin care and activities immediately post treatment. We will discuss any special instructions for you during your consultation and or treatment.

  • Is Sofwave safe?

The safety profile for Sofwave is excellent. No adverse events were reported in the original Sofwave clinical studies. There is an integrated cooling mechanism Sofcool™ that protects the uppermost skin layer from excessive heating and the design of Sofwave precisely controls the uniform depth of penetration.

  • How many treatments does it take?

With Sofwave, the majority of patients only need one treatment, however, some may benefit from one additional treatment, depending on how much skin laxity they have and their body’s own physiological response to the treatment.

  • Does Sofwave stimulate the creation of new collagen or elastin fibers?

Collagen and elastin are natural proteins that gives skin its youthfulness by keeping it firm and toned. As we age, collagen breaks down, and the result is wrinkled and sagging skin. Sofwave’s synchronous ultrasound parallel beam technology generates heat at the desired depth in the mid-dermis to promote new collagen and elastin fibers growth.

  • Who is a good candidate for Sofwave?

Good candidates for Sofwave typically have mild to moderate skin laxity. The potential patient should have some degree of fine lines and wrinkles and/or loose skin under the neck and under the chin.

  • Can Sofwave be performed on Black or Brown skin of color?

Yes, ultrasound therapy is “color blind” and may be used on patients of nearly all skin types.

  • How old can patients be treated?

There is no absolute limit. Some patients in their 70’s may have biologically younger healthy skin and may respond well to treatment. Also, some much younger patients may not be ideal candidates due to various skin or medical conditions or excessive skin laxity.

  • Can you use fillers with a Sofwave treatment?

Yes, typically a filler may be injected 48 hours before or 48 hours after treatment.
