Radiesse® is a dermal filler. Like many others, it is approved for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. Radiesse is made of tiny calcium-based microspheres which are suspended in a natural, water-based gel. These calcium based microspheres are similar to minerals that are found naturally in your body. This substance does occur naturally in the body (in the bones) but not in the skin.
Radiesse acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure. Studies show that it also helps to stimulate production of your own collagen. Radiesse is typically injected just below the dermis, deeper than some other fillers. Over time, your body will absorb the gel, but the collagen your skin made will remain behind for some time after the injections. The wrinkle-improving effects from Radiesse injections can last up to a year for some patients.
