Smile lines (nasolabial folds) and Marionette lines appear commonly as we age. These are the lines that run downwards from the corner of the mouth. They can make you appear to be frowning and can make you appear sad, tired or unhappy even when you are not! As we age, these lines can become deeper and sagging skin from loss of mid-face cheek fat can produce an overhang of sagging cheek skin that may make them appear even deeper.
Here, I used Juvéderm Ultra and Ultra Plus to help to restore some of the lost volume and elevate the depth of the furrows so that the darker shadows that accentuate the depth of these folds and furrows are not as evident. The result is a youthful, more rested look that people notice, but typically, they don’t know something was done. It also helps to avoid the drawn or tight look sometimes seen after some facelifts and gives a soft natural look.
In Europe, where Juvéderm Voluma has been used since 2005 to restore lost mid-face volume, a patient like the one in this photo might have had a ‘lift’ and the result created is even better and also less filler material is needed for these furrows because the lifting effect removes the overhang or sagging skin. Pending FDA approval in America, Juvéderm Voluma will allow a longer lasting and even more youthful, rested appearance for patients like this.
Note: Many of the uses of Juvéderm which we are illustrating are considered ‘off-label’ by the FDA. This is very common that once a product as versatile and useful as the HA fillers such as Juvéderm are approved for one use/one anatomic area on the face, that cosmetic physicians will develop multiple new uses and techniques. That is the case with Juvéderm and other HA fillers which have a variety of uses ranging from improving the contour of noses to filling acne scars and a host of volume filling of fine lines, furrows, folds and sunken areas on the face. Our photos illustrate some of what is possible using these fillers off-label.
